Vocal Rhapsody II: Exploring Your Voice: Technique, Storytelling & Self-Care with Lady A

In this class, blues artist Lady A teaches artists to lead with authenticity—starting with how they tell their stories. Focusing on writing, producing, and performing, she shows how genuine storytelling shapes every part of the craft. Beyond the music, Lady A emphasizes the responsibilities that come with being an artist: collaboration, community involvement, and, most importantly, caring for your instrument—your voice.

The class also dives into the business side of the industry, offering essential knowledge on BMI, ASCAP, licensing, credits, and protecting your work. Whether you're new to the scene or an established artist, you'll leave with tools to strengthen your artistry, navigate the business, and sustain your journey.

7 - 9 pm at The Couth Buzzard

Join Jimmy & Maia on the third night of Peysakh and the second day of the Omer, גְבוּרָה שֶׁבְּחֶֽסֶד, strength within loving-kindness. Using the Montréal Arbeter Ring Hagode oyf Yiddish printed in 1980 as a guide, we will sing and play through the structure of a Yiddish Socialist Seder while noshing on ritual foods and recipes from the amazing Couth Buzzard cafe.

Come join us for our twice-monthly night of musical Yiddishkayt! We’ll jam on klezmer tunes and sing Yiddish songs together. All ages, abilities, and instruments are welcome! In fact, you don't even need an instrument, only a voice, ears, or dancing feet. Instrumentalists less familiar with klezmer are encouraged to arrive at the start. We begin each session by either learning the tune-of-the-month or by having a short workshop session. While we have sheet music in many clefs and keys, we encourage learning by ear. To find tunes and other resources, visit the klezmer jam page on The Rhapsody Project’s website.

  • This session will lean toward instrumental tunes.
  • For all ages. 12 and under with an adult present. Singers, listeners, dancers, and instrumentalists all welcome. If bringing an instrument, a small amount of experience is recommended. Beginners to klezmer are welcome.
  • Jams are scheduled for the second and fourth Mondays of each month.
  • Pricing info: No entry fee, however, donations are strongly encouraged and are crucial to keep programming going. Suggested donation: $10 - 20

Session 1 with Junious Brickhouse

Friday, May 2 - 5:00 - 8:00 pm

Erased, Not Forgotten: Tracing the Roots and Resistance to Cultural Erasure
A historical inquiry into pre-transatlantic cultural memory and the systems that sought to silence it

Junious Lee Brickhouse—dancer, folklorist, and cultural researcher—offers a deep and necessary exploration into the historical context preceding the transatlantic slave trade. This program examines the deliberate erasure of cultural knowledge as a tool of colonial dominance and asks: how successful were these efforts, and what has truly been lost?
Participants will engage with the historical sources and causes of cultural erasure, tracing the patterns established through early colonial projects and their continued impact today. The session builds a foundational understanding of how systems of power have worked to suppress cultural memory.
At a time of increasing division and institutional instability, this offering challenges participants to consider how truth can be re-centered and how the revitalization of marginalized cultures contributes to healing and wholeness in fractured communities.
