Session 3: Yiddish Protest Music in the Streets
Monday, June 23rd
5 - 8 pm
at Judkins Park
2510 S Norman St
Featuring Rhapsody culture bearers Jimmy Austin and Chris Mena!
In partnership with Seattle Parks and The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.
Sing, jam, and dance to combat cultural erasure.
The Rhapsody Project's Roots Music Seminar, Face the Music, is combining with our klezmer jam for a special three-part series! Each session will start with a workshop and end with a jam. Each will focus on Yiddish protest music, Yiddish movement, or both. We'll dig into the roots and learn what we can draw from them into the present. Our first session, hosted by the Yiddish folk-punk band Brivele, will focus on protest songs. Christina Crowder will return all the way from Connecticut for our second session to teach about movement, gesture, and dance at The Rhapsody Workshop. For the last one, we'll meet outdoors at Judkins Park to make a street band and bring the movement of our bodies together with the social movement of protest music. This last session will be co-taught by Jimmy Austin and Chris Mena. Come to all three sessions or just one!
